PJM has teamed up with Google in attempts to speed up its grid interconnection process using AI.
Tapestry, part of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, will integrate PJM databases and tools into a single unified network model in hopes of ramping up energy projects in the queue faster.
The PJM Interconnection is the largest grid operator in the U.S., serving 65 million people across 13 states and the District of Columbia. But today, PJM is struggling to integrate the megawatts needed to keep up with surging power demand from data centers, manufacturing plants, and electrification.
Right now, PJM’s interconnection process takes a lengthy 2 years. As of the end of January, the overwhelmed queue had roughly 79 GW of solar, 37 GW of storage, 23 GW of wind and 4 GW of gas.
Hopefully, with Tapestry’s help, PJM will be able to get much needed resources online sooner. If not, the region risks power shortages as energy demand continues to see huge growth.
